The Best Place to Eat in Cancun

Cancun, and the hotel zone in particular, is not exactly known for its authenticity when it comes to food or culture, but that does not stop me from digging for some. Guess what!? It paid off! I found El Galeon del Caribe which is located in the hotel zone. It is probably the most authentic restaurant in Cancun. Now, it is somewhat hard to find. It’s located at kilometer marker 19.4, and there is no sign.  There is Just a small parking lot and a thatched roof. We walked in, and much to my delight, we were the only tourists. I knew we were going to be in for a treat!

It is a very limited menu with a focus on seafood. I recommend the shrimp and octopus ceviche and the fish tacos. Both were totally scrumptious!!!  The atmosphere is super casual – dirt floor, picnic tables, plastic chairs and it’s totally perfect. They cook over an open fire right in the restaurant.  There is no separate kitchen and you can watch your food being prepped while you gaze over the lagoon. I could have sat in that local restaurant all afternoon!!  Another bonus is that it is super affordable.

My other favorite place is Harry’s. Admittedly, this is a chain, but they have the absolute best mojitos and the sunset is insanely beautiful. We have eaten here twice. Once, was incredible. The second time was yummy, but not quite as good as the first go around. The best part though?! The cotton candy dessert!!!!!
