Traveling to St. Thomas during Covid

Covid regulations are constantly changing, so be sure to review the rules before you go! We went in September and were required to have a negative covid test within five days of traveling. The results have to be uploaded to the USVI travel portal. We had to test even though we were vaccinated and were not required to quarantine. We had to self declare we were symptom-free and were not in contact with a Covid-Positive person upon arrival at the St. Thomas airport. While in St. Thomas, masks were required in all public areas. We found the entire process was quite streamlined.

When to travel to St. Thomas

We traveled to St. Thomas in September, which is hurricane season and is off-season. Due to the month and the effects of Covid, many restaurants and shops were sadly closed. It was not ideal, but we were perfectly happy lounging at our hotel. I would recommend traveling over the winter months, but I imagine it would be quite busy.

The Ritz Carlton Hotel

Our digs were the beautiful Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas!! Immediately, we were struck by the stunning views and the attentive staff. The service was top-notch, which started with a choice of two welcome drinks, either of which could have a splash of rum added. (T-Tip – If you go to the lobby around check-in, the staff will happily serve you a welcome drink well past your first day!). After check-in, we were whisked by golf cart to our room, which was absolutely beautiful. We booked the most basic room but were granted a complimentary upgrade with our Mariott Bonvoy Status. (T-Tip – It pays to be loyal! Find a hotel brand you like, get the credit card and stick with it).

The resort had two pools, a waterslide, a beautiful beach, complimentary paddle-boards, Hobie-cats, kayaks, and canoes. We very quickly decided we would be spending most of the trip on property.

Food in St. Thomas.

Sadly, we did not have any great meals on this trip. If I have one complaint about the hotel, it would be that. The restaurants were quite expensive and not that good. Breakfast was the best meal and offered an unlimited mimosa option. Drinks are expensive, so after two, you break even. (T-Tip – Ask for a roadie on the way out!) We ventured off property for two meals. The first was to Sunset Grille. The food was quite decent, but the sunset view was incredible. Book a reservation thirty minutes before sunset, and you will be in for a treat.

The second place we went, and my most favorite, was Duffy’s Love Shack. It looks similar to a camper and is sitting in a parking lot of a strip mall! Don’t be deterred! The atmosphere was the most fun, and the chicken tacos were excellent! One mistake we made was not paying the small up-charge to have our cocktails in a fun glass! I recommend you learn from our error and splurge!

We did venture off-site once for a day trip to St. John’s. You can read about it here!

Childfree Legend:
👶 – The best of child-free locations – No kids allowed!!
👶👶 –  Kids allowed, but there are adult areas or not many children present.
👶👶👶 – Children are present.
👶👶👶👶 – DANGER ZONE – Too many kids to be enjoyable

👶👶👶 – There were two pools with one waterslide which meant not too many kids were on the beach. It is possible there would be waaayy more children during peek times.

Cheers!
